Project Overview
The Midnight Echoes approached me with raw recordings from their debut EP. The band had captured great performances in a local studio, but the tracks needed professional mixing and mastering to compete in today's market.
The Challenge
The original recordings had several issues that needed addressing:
- Muddy low-end from room acoustics
- Harsh guitar frequencies from amp placement
- Inconsistent vocal levels and tone
- Drums lacking punch and definition
- Overall lack of cohesion between tracks
My Approach
Mixing Strategy
Drums
- Problem: Drums sounded small and lacked impact
- Solution: Used parallel compression and careful EQ to bring out the natural room sound while adding modern punch
- Technique: Blended close mics with room mics, added subtle samples for consistency
Guitars
- Problem: Competing frequencies between rhythm guitars
- Solution: Carved complementary EQ curves and used strategic panning
- Technique: High-passed rhythm guitars, used mid-side EQ for width control
Vocals
- Problem: Inconsistent tone and level throughout songs
- Solution: Detailed editing and dynamic processing
- Technique: Clip gain automation, de-essing, and multiband compression
Bass
- Problem: Competing with kick drum, unclear note definition
- Solution: Sidechain compression and frequency separation
- Technique: Split bass into sub and mid frequencies, processed separately
Mastering Process
Each track was mastered to achieve:
- Consistent loudness across the EP (-14 LUFS for streaming)
- Enhanced stereo width while maintaining mono compatibility
- Smooth frequency response suitable for various playback systems
- Dynamic range preservation despite competitive loudness
